Garth Crooks' team of the week: Rudiger, Rodri, Sterling, Mane

TheSolskjaer was dismissed after the Manchester United's defeat at the hands of theWatford Hornets.

Manchester City won by the same score at home to Everton as they did atLeicester, keeping them at the top of the table.

Steven Gerrard's first game as a manager was a 2-0 win for Villa over Seagulls.

Dean Smith's first game in charge of Canaries was a win, while Eddie Howe's first game in charge of the Magpies was a draw.

In other games, Wolves beat West Ham, Spurs came from behind to win against Leeds, and Crystal Palace drew 3-3 withBurnley.

You can check out my team of the week and then make your own selections at the bottom of the article.

The goalkeeper is from Aston Villa.

The save by Martinez from Trossard suggested that the Argentine was back in business. The save from Lamptey's shot was even better.

The full-back had a chance to score, but the keeper was off his line quickly. I've only seen one shaky performance from him this season, and that was away from the club who should never have allowed him to go to Villa in the first place.

At the time, the best keeper at the club was Martinez. It was rather odd because everyone else did.

Did you know? In his 49th start in the competition for the club, Roberto Martinez kept his 19th clean sheet for Villa.

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Antonio Rudiger, and Tyrone Ming.

Trent Alexander-Arnold displayed another superb display of precision passing. He produced two assists on this occasion against the Gunners and they will join a long list of assists for the full-back since his arrival on the scene at Anfield.

The player from England has given the team more depth. Any set-piece around the box is an issue for the opposition. The quality of the ball can be a problem for the goalkeeper or the defence.

Did you know? Alexander-Arnold has provided more assists than any other player in this period.

I remember Antonio Rudiger scoring from a set-piece in the previous game. You would have thought that the Foxes would have learned their lesson by now.

The German is a threat in the penalty area, and his headed goal was an absolute peach. The back of the defence was impenetrable with the help of Thiago Silva and Rudiger.

The best defender is Rudiger. Lose him for any length of time for whatever reason and you might find yourself in a spot of bother.

Did you know? In the 30 matches Antonio Rudiger has started for the Blues, they have conceded just 0.5 goals per game, compared with 1.3 goals per game in the 20 matches he has not started.

The arrival of Steven Gerrard at Villa Park seems to have done the trick. It has raised expectations among their fans, restored confidence in the team, and seen a return to the starting line-up for Tyrone Mings after he was left out of the side by Dean Smith for the game against West Ham.

Smith had a problem in the dressing room when he dropped the team captain. Managers rarely recover from those events. Who can say what the future holds for Villa, Mings or Gerrard with both of them back in the side?

Did you know? After 40 appearances without a goal, Tyrone Mings found the net for the first time since November 2020.

Quarterbacks: Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, N'Golo Kante, Rodri, and Tom Cleverley.

It was obvious to me that Spurs were out of their depth when we were not that long into the game.

If you had read the Crooks of Matter recently, you would know why I don't doubt Antonio Conte's credentials. There is an enormous amount of work to be done at Spurs.

He could do a lot worse if he started building his team around Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. The Denmark international is a serious, no-nonsense individual who appears to have all the characteristics that Conte admires. The Italian manager's passion for the game and will to win is compelling. It will take some time for Spurs to match that.

Did you know? Hojbjerg has scored as many goals for Spurs as he did for Saints. He has four league goals for Spurs at the Spurs' stadium.

I don't know why he doesn't do it more often, he's very capable of this. N'Golo Kante's strike with his left foot was brilliant.

Kante is back to his best, but he is more comfortable on the ball than I have ever seen him. You will usually find out who the best 11 players are on a given team. I don't know what their best team is, that's the beauty of this side. It's very difficult to get him out of the system once someone comes in. It's only possible if you have the depth of squad and the quality of players to do it.

Did you know? Chris Wood and Emile Heskey have both scored more goals against the Foxes than Kante.

The silent assassin wasn't silent againstEverton. His strike against the Toffees was incredible. Two weeks ago, Rodri was made to play a different role on my team, where he was less concerned about scoring goals than stopping the opposition from playing.

The way the ball broke for Rodri made it irresistible for the player to hit it. The ball flew into the back of the net after he did that. Rodri will probably pick up more bookings in a season than goals.

Did you know? Four of Rodri's eight goals for Manchester City have been scored from outside the box. Since the start of the season, only Kevin de Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez have netted more for the club from outside the box than Rodri.

Few might remember that Tom Cleverley won a title while playing for Manchester United. I wonder what the player thought of the side that won the title in 2013. I think the conversation between the two after the game might have been rather colourful, as David de Gea was the only survivor from that title-winning season.

Cleverley wasn't a star when he was playing for United. This is an honest professional who has had a wonderful career and is playing as well as he can. Jadon Sancho is starting to wonder if he made the right move to Manchester United, and he must be wondering if he went to the right club.

Did you know? Cleverley played the full 90 minutes for the first time in a year in the victory. He faced his former side for the sixth time in the league and the first time he won.

The forwards are: Sadio Mane, Emmanuel Dennis, and Raheem Sterling.

"We are in a very difficult situation at the moment," said De Gea in his post match interview. We don't know how to defend properly, we don't know what to do with the ball.

The Manchester United coaching staff was indicted. When a player is prepared to come on national TV and be so critical of his team's performance, that is the end of the manager. It proved. It was inevitable that Ole Solskjaer would leave.

The arrival ofRonaldo only served to paper over the cracks, while the arrival of Ranieri might actually save the club.

The Africa Cup of Nations for Nigeria in January could be just as big a deal for Dennis as he was for United.

Did you know? Dennis is averaging a goal or assist every 93 minutes in the premier league this season, the fourth-best ratio of any player with 500+ minutes played, after Mohammed Salah (every 60), Reece James (every 69) and Paul Pogba (every 90).

He's not been playing his best for his club for a while, but he's done better for his country.

The man looked a little bit like his old self. His goal was brilliant, but I feel that his game has gone back to where it was a year ago.

You can't fault his work rate, but he doesn't seem to be as clinical in front of the goal. If he can get that back, he is back in business. It will take some work to get it done.

Did you know? The youngest player to reach 300 appearances in the competition is James Milner, who was 26 years old when he did it.

So it's like that, is that what it is? I was curious about the touchline row with Mikel Arteta. It was clear from the post- match interview that he thought the challenge on Takehiro Tomiyasu was fair, but he used the confrontation with Arteta to fuel the crowd.

The only mistake Arteta made was getting involved with Klopp in the first place. The row was going to ignite the crowd. The architect of the incident with Tomiyasu also took advantage of the rise in temperature with a well-taken goal and a glorious assist. Arteta was not the villain.

Did you know? During his career in the premier league, he has scored eight times against the north London team.

The criminals of the matter.

December 1978 was the last month of the year. Manchester United were not saying a lot.

The Baggies were near the top of the table and there was a faint whiff of a league title hovering over The Hawthorns, so a visit to Old United was going to be a real test. The Baggies had three black players playing for them, which was unique to the time, and I was particularly interested in the fixture.

I didn't know that Laurie Cunningham, Bryan Robson, and Gerald Sinstadt would go on to become famous football figures, or that Cyrille Regis would become United and England's captain.

The match itself was considered a classic, but West Brom won the game. I have never heard anyone call out racist abuse during a football commentary.

The commentators would tell you who the players were, followed by a comment. Every player's attribute is analyzed, as well as his wife and children's names.

The recent passing of Sinstadt didn't give enough credit for his brave comments. The game will be remembered for great goals and a famous victory by the Baggies, but for me, it was Sinstadt's finest hour.
