IOC says Peng Shuai told Olympic officials she is safe

The IOC said that Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai called them from Beijing and told them she was okay.

The call came as global alarm over Peng grew. Her appearance at a youth tennis event in Beijing on her behalf did not convince people outside of China that she has the right to act after she alleged a sexual assault against a former Communist Party official.

The call appears to be the first direct contact with sports officials outside of China since she disappeared from public view.

The IOC said that Peng thanked them for their concern about her well-being.

She explained that she is safe and well, but would like to have her privacy respected at this time. She prefers to spend her time with her friends and family right now.

Three weeks ago, a former member of the Communist Party's ruling Standing Committee was accused of sexual assault by a former player for China.

The former top-ranked doubles player went missing after the post was removed. She didn't respond to calls for information to show she was ok.

The IOC was criticized for being silent in public as concern for Peng grew. It has pursued a quiet diplomacy policy with the host nation of the Olympics. The Beijing Winter Games will be held in February.

When he arrives in Beijing in January, the IOC said, Bach invited Peng to join him at a dinner. Terho and Li were also invited.

Terho said that he was relieved to see that Peng Shuai was doing well. The hockey player is on the IOC board.

Terho said that she appeared to be relaxed. She appreciated the fact that I offered her our support and kept in touch at any time of her convenience.
