The loss by Utah on Saturday night in Salt Lake City means that the Pac-12 won't have a representative in the College Football Playoff for the fifth straight season.
It means that a college football fan will have a choice between Alabama or Notre Dame.
Here is how it is shaping up. Georgia is in if it loses to Georgia Tech next week and Alabama in the SEC title game. The winner of the Big Ten championship game is in. If Cincinnati finishes with wins over Notre Dame, SMU, and Houston, they will be in.
With Alabama having two losses and Notre Dame only one, it would seem that the Irish would be the one to get the last spot, because they would face Georgia instead of Alabama.
What if Alabama beats Georgia? They would have a win over Georgia and then the Big Ten champ would go with the two SEC teams and a team that Cincinnati beat. The committee could not rank Notre Dame over Cincinnati. They could anyway. They couldn't.
You can either root for Alabama or Notre Dame in the SEC title game. Isn't that wonderful?
We are all doomed if Cincinnati loses a game or the Big Ten West survivor wins the title game.
The anniversary was golden.
The only game of the season that mattered for either team was Cal's 41-11 win over Stanford, which would have been the only game of the season if the Cardinal hadn't upset Oregon.
Exactly 39 years ago, the Band Play took place.
It hasn't gotten old yet.
