Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: The stats that tell the tale of Man Utd manager's reign

Solskjaer was in charge of Manchester United for three years.

The game fell down because of defensive troubles, too many failed passes and a pressing game. There were no trophies. Not enough wins are ultimately.

The struggles that led to Solskjaer's exit from Manchester United were the result of those statistics.

Solskjaer will always be a legend at Old United for scoring the dramatic winner in the 1999 European Championship final, but as a manager he couldn't bring back the glory days of Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Norwegian is the fourth permanent United boss to lose his job in the eight years since Ferguson stepped down. How does he compare to the other three? Where did Solskjaer's United fall short?

The post-Fergie managers have done well.

Solskjaer returned to United in December of last year to take over as the new manager.

He leaves with a better win record than David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, and a better percentage return.

Both of them won trophies. The FA Cup was won by the Dutchman shortly before he was sacked, and the double of the Europa League and EFL Cup was won by the Portuguese.

The only thing that the past four permanent managers have succeeded in is winning the title. Ferguson's 13th and final title, won in 2013, is United's last.

Solskjaer guided United to two top-three finishes in the premier league. They finished runners-up to Manchester City last season. He missed out on a trophy when his side lost on penalties in the Europa League final.

The Norwegian achieved a win percentage of 54.2%, behind the 58.3% achieved by the Portuguese, but ahead of the 52.9% achieved by Van Gaal, and the 2 victories he oversaw as interim coach.

In just 14 extra games, Solskjaer's United scored 64 more goals than they did under the previous boss.

What has Man Utd been doing this season?

Under Solskjaer, United have scored a lot. His team conceded an average of 1,09 goals per game. The average number of matches that United let in was 121.

The current top four have scored more than seventh-ranked United this season, but only the bottom two sides have conceded more.

In the league games, United has only two clean sheets. Why is that happening?

There is an excess of defensive mistakes. Their 11 errors leading to shots on goal is the worst in the division, with only three other sides committing more errors.

Solskjaer's team have given the ball away too often in key areas and have failed to win it back. Only one team in the league is worse for failed passes in their own half, and that isLeicester City.

In the wake of the home defeat by the Reds in October, United's pressing tactics were heavily criticized, and Solskjaer's side were lacking in this regard.

They have regained possession in the final third just 45 times this season, less than four times a match, and a total lower than all but five other clubs. The best team in the league for winning the ball back deep in the opposing team's territory has done it 74 times this season.

Whoever takes over at Old United will know how important it is to improve their numbers quickly, and how important that is to their season.
