Cowboy Bebop: The Movie was released in 2001 and takes place during the last few episodes of the show. The plot points and enemies of the movie are rarely acknowledged outside of the movie'sQuarantine Zone. Knockin' On Heaven's Door is critical to the conversation surrounding the show's cultural impact.
In Knockin' On Heaven's Door, the gang are sucked into a bio-terrorism plot, forced to stop the evilVincent Volaju before he unleash a deadly storm of nanobots on Mars. A typical Cowboy Bebop episode is great because the movie hits on all the little things. Every character has a chance to let their talents be known. The spaceship battle is underscored by the soundtrack. At the end, the bad guy is very real.

Knockin' On Heaven's Door is crucial to Cowboy Bebop's narrative because of the villain's tragedy. In Cowboy Bebop, every episode gives you a glimpse into what makes each character tick, and in the movie, we are allowed to see the characters as never before. The English voice cast of the show have some of their most memorable moments in the movie.
Beau Billingslea, voice actor for Jet Black, says in an interview with The Verge that he got emotional about Spike's experience.
Steve Blum is the voice of Spike Spiegel.
The most profound moment for me was when he was talking to Electra about the pain that he was experiencing and his loss and damage.
One of the movie's quieter moments is when he is stuck in a prison with the Commander Shepard, voiced by Jen Hale. Spike has a history with the Syndicate mob, and as Elektra shares her past relationship withVincent, Spike also has a history with the mob.
In the movie, Spike says that he was not afraid of anything when he was younger. I didn't have a fear of dying, but then I met a woman and it changed. For the first time, I was scared of death.
It was the first time that Spike really got vulnerable, and it was the deepest and most open Spike ever is. Spike tried so hard to hide or escape in this movie moment.
The movie is held in high regard by the voice of Faye Valentine, Wendee Lee. Lee says that all of the characters have damage. They save Spike for the film. It was much later. Think of the genius in the way Bebop delivers the story. One of the greater appeals of the whole franchise is in itself.
Cowboy Bebop was recorded in a way that made it seem like the actors were coming in solo to record their scenes. The camaraderie we hear in the banter of the crew is recorded in isolation, but it is still genuine.
Steve left a note in the script. He said, "Hey Beau, Jet sucks." In the script, I said, "Hey Steve, Spike sucks, and the Bebop to my ship."
The most profound moment for me was when he was talking to Elektra about the pain that he was experiencing and his loss and damage.
The actors were brought into a studio to record their performances and the producers were close by to give their opinions. The recording of the moment between Spike and Elektra was so emotional that it broke down for him.
The moment was brief compared to the exposition for a lot of the other characters. It was kind of amazing that it was so powerful and then went back into action. It taught me that a moment can change your life for the better. It changed me as an actor and as a person. I didn't realize that until a long time later.
The actors agree that Knockin' On Heaven's Door is important to Cowboy Bebop because of its profound character and actor moments, and also because of two of the best songs in the Bebop soundtrack canon.
One of the favorite songs of Blum is "Gotta Knock A Little Harder."
Cowboy Bebop is having a resurgence. The show was released 22 years ago, and now the live-action adaptation and the original animation are available to stream on Funimation. The movie seems to be missing from the conversation despite the surge of Cowboy Bebop news. It doesn't help that it can't be streamed. Even though both services carry the show, it is not available on either of them. You can stream it on Canada's version of Netflix. I was able to rewatch the movie myself because I had a physical copy of it that my father bought at the store the day it was released. Knockin' On Heaven's Door should be included in the live-action show when we talk about how great Cowboy Bebop is.
