I drove a 3-wheeled, one-seater electric car on a mini road trip through Southern California and I'm convinced it could change how we get from A-to-B

The caption will look like this.

The electric car market is dominated byTesla, even though Volkswagen Group is still the best-selling automaker. Volkswagen has plans in place to take over from Musk's company as the leader in EV sales in the U.S.

The SOLO EV can travel 100 miles on a full charge.

It's a one-seater with three wheels, but it has creature comforts of a full-sized vehicle.

It's a great ride to drive around town, and can take you a long way.

I've been thinking about choices. There's no shortage of options when you're shopping for a car in the US. There is an overabundance of SUVs and four-door sedans, as well as a supply chain crisis and a chip shortage.

I wonder if it's worth it to have four wheels and empty seats on the road. Is there an in-between car for when I just need to run an errand, pick up food, or drive solo? I could plug that in-between car into a wall outlet in my garage.

When I got the keys to the SOLO EV, I had a few weeks to think about those questions.

Let's get the obvious out of the way: the SOLO EV looks quirky. People stopped to take pictures of it in the driveway. One person asked where the rest of it was.

I wanted to drive more when I was in Los Angeles during the warm early days of fall. The comfortable seat, air-conditioning, and audio made the SOLO EV feel like a rocket. It's easy to get to an 80 mile-per-hour top speed.

"We've been working to really, truly tune into the personal transportation needs of our customers." Kevin Pavlov is the CEO of ElectraMeccanica. He and the company's chief financial officer, Bal Bhullar, sat down with me at an October delivery event where early reservation holders drove away in their own SOLO EV.

Who needs a one-seater electric car? It's a valid question. There is a sizable market for the SOLO, be it as a fleet vehicle for last-mile deliveries, or for college campuses, according to Pavlov. He said that the market will keep telling them where the niches go and that will give them time to make more personalized answers.

We're in the early aughts of an automotive revolution. Government plans to phase out internal combustion engines over the next decade are helping to make battery electric vehicles more popular. There are now dozens of electric cars available, and many more in the works. They're also getting less expensive. The SOLO EV can be had for $18,500.

The talk about range anxiety in the early days of the electric car is over now. Electric vehicles can travel 200 miles on a full charge.

Range anxiety is not important.

I wondered how far I could go with the SOLO EV after a few short trips. 100 miles is more than enough for most drivers, who will mostly use this for short commute and jaunts around town.

Some people will drive 10 miles, some will go 30 miles. Some people want to drive it. Some will drive this car to find themselves.

I had an idea at that point. I thought about the first car review I did for Business Insider when I drove the new Volvo XC90 from LA to San Francisco on one tank of gas, thinking I'd try for a long trip in the SOLO EV. To prove that range anxiety is not worth it.

I was going to take the SOLO eastward from LA to the high desert.

99% charge at the start of the trip.

The electric three-wheeler proved to be a fun, capable and versatile ride. I was in the desert with my battery-powered coach and A/C flowing.

I had 26 miles of range to spare and pulled up to a drive-treak for lunch.

The ChargePoint location I was going to visit was three miles away.

I walked away to enjoy my lunch and visit with my family. The SOLO EV had regained most of its battery charge, more than enough for a 75-mile trip back home, after I returned more than two hours later.

Driving is minimalist.

It's nice to slip into something that's anti-all of that in a world of automobiles that seem larger and faster than ever. The SOLO EV is large enough for my frame, and quick enough to go past gasoline-powered vehicles from a stop, thanks to the instant Torque you get from the electric motor.

Maybe that idea of "just enough" is suitable for this segment of the micromobility space. If it helps preserve the environment, that's all the better.

Ford and Rivian won't work together on electric vehicles. That isn't a big surprise, but the news may leave investors wondering why.

The 3.0-liter Duramax diesel six- cylinder engine was not available in August of 2021. Consumer Reports ranked the brands you can buy. It was next to last because of subpar scores from its SUVs.

The Rivian automotive hype train has cooled off a little as the share prices of America's second-largest automaker by market cap are down over 25% from their high. Both QuantumScape and ChargePoint have footholds in their respective niches of the EV industry, with a fair share of growth prospects of their own. Investing can be about perspective when looking into speculative names that have to grow into current valuations.

The market was surprised by General Electric's announcement that it planned to separate into three companies. When it's broken up, the parts should trade at higher valuation multiples than their implied valuation, according to that thinking. The purpose of the break up is to allow the businesses to be run with greater focus and have capital structures tailored to their own unique strategies and industry dynamics, as CEO Larry Culp put it in the investor update.

There is a new launch company that is able to count itself among the small group that has reached space. The rocket startup took off from its launch site in Alaska at 1 AM local time on Friday.
