The Pacific Spaceport Complex in Alaska has a rocket ready for takeoff.
The list of privately-owned space companies that have successfully reached their destination is now dominated by Astra. The launch vehicle 0007 took off from the Pacific Spaceport Complex in Alaska at 1 am on Saturday. The 43-foot rocket achieved a 500 km high altitude around nine minutes after liftoff.
Chris Kemp, the CEO of the company, said that the team had worked so hard on the project for so many years. We have rocket serial number eight, nine, 10 in production, so we are just getting started.
The startup has failed several times to reach the space station.
The California-based startup had several failed attempts to reach the space station. The first attempt to launch took place in March of 2020 during the DARPA competition. Technical issues prevented the rocket from leaving the ground.
In September, issues with the rocket's guidance system led to the flight being cut short. After running low on fuel, it wasn't able to slip into space with its rocket, but three months later it did.
The most recent attempt was in August of this year. The rocket only reached an altitude of 31 miles before the launch was stopped because of an engine failure.
One of the few US companies that have achieved space with a privately-owned rocket is Astra. You can watch the entire launch on the NASASpaceflight YouTube channel.
