Police in India charge Amazon executives in marijuana case

Senior executives of Amazon India have been charged by the police in India for their alleged involvement in the sale of marijuana in the South Asian market.

The police didn't say how many senior executives they had charged, but said that the executive directors of Amazon India were being accused under the nation's narcotics law.

Two men were arrested by the police in the state of Maharashtra for using the Amazon India website to smuggle marijuana.

Last week, Amazon said it was cooperating with the authority. The home minister of India said that Amazon was not cooperating with the investigation.

An Amazon India spokesman told TechCrunch that the company has a high bar on compliance and contractually our sellers are required to comply with all applicable laws for selling their products on Amazon.in. We don't allow the sale of products that are not allowed in India.

In case sellers list such products as an alternative, we take strict action as may be required under the law. We are currently investigating the issue that was notified to us. We assure full co-operation and support required to Investigating Authorities and Law Enforcement agencies with ongoing investigations and ensure full compliance with applicable laws.

Amazon has a key market in India. Over $6.5 billion has been invested in India by the American e-commerce giant. The company is currently being investigated for antitrust in the country and is in the middle of a multi-billion dollar dispute with two of India's largest retail chains.
