Google seeks recusal probe for incoming antitrust chief over Yelp and Microsoft cases

The Department of Justice was requested by the search giant to look into whether the head of the antitrust division should be removed from federal antitrust investigations into the company. The lawsuit will be led by Kanter, who will argue that the search and advertising markets are dominated by one company.

The search giant argues that he should be disqualified because he has represented a number of companies in motions against it. Microsoft was represented in a motion arguing against the acquisition of DoubleClick by Google, which was eventually approved by regulators and was closed in 2008.

The Biden administration has made a number of prominent antitrust appointments, including the confirmation of the chair of the Federal Trade Commission, the role of Tim Wu at the National Economic Council and the appointment of Kanter. The efforts by Amazon and Facebook to have Lina Khan re-sworn from their cases have had little effect.
