Victorian child becomes youngest Australian to die with Covid as NT cases rise

The youngest person to die with Covid-19 is a child.

There were five new deaths, including a child, on Saturday. The child had other serious comorbidities.

Osama Suduh was the youngest person in Australia to die from the virus.

The teenager from south-west Sydney died in August after contracting a disease, but it was not the reason for his hospitalisation or death.

New South Wales has reported 182 new Covid cases.

The NT had a new case of a woman from Robinson River. She was the 22nd case of the current outbreak.

The woman was not infectious in the community and had been moved into a quachicle at Howard Springs, south of Darwin, according to the NT chief minister.

A 59-year-old woman whose case was reported on Friday had also been confirmed as having been fully vaccine free.

New NT rules for interstate arrivals will come into effect on Monday, including a reduction of the home quark period.

Unvaccinated people from green zones are more at risk to us.

The home quark period will be reduced from 14 days to seven following a trial of more than 100 people. The arrivals need a negative test within the previous 72 hours, a negative test on their fifth, eighth and 14th day, and a negative test on their last day in the territory.

For the week after home quarantining, arrivals can move around the community they isolated in but must avoid high-risk areas such as aged care, health and correctional facilities, as well as remote communities.

Most public places have lifted the territory-wide mask mandate.

The chief minister said 512 of the results were processed in the territory. He praised the workers who spent the 42C day in full PPE testing all the residents in Binjari, finishing at 2am on Saturday.

This is a good day, said Gunner. We are more confident. We feel better today about releasing the lock down.

An unvaccinated, untested woman from Australia visited Victoria and did not declare the NT outbreak.

There were 182 new Covid cases in the state on Saturday. The number of people who are seriously ill with the virus has fallen, with 191 of them in the hospital.

94.3% of residents over the age of 16 have stepped forward for at least one jab and 91.7% have received two jabs, as the state is closer to the 95% mark for first-dose vaccinations.

Of the 12- to 15-year-old age group, 74.9% are fully vaccine-free and 80.9% have received at least one vaccine.

A senior government minister suggested on Friday that the codes could be retired in lower risk settings.

He told the ABC that if the vaccination rates maintain a high trajectory, we can retire them in low risk settings, but if they go back on, we might need to turn them on.

The government is considering requirements for close contacts of Covid-19 cases.

The crisis cabinet will review the issue next week, according to the premier.

International students will be allowed to fly into Victoria without being quarantining.

International students can skip a 48 hour test if they are double-dosed and provide a negative test 48 hours before departure, according to the state government.

The federal government has approved a plan for the first planeload of international students to arrive in Australia.

It is the first step in the state's plan to rebuild its education industry.
