Clint Frazier's tenure with the Yankees might have ended after five unfulfilling seasons when New York designated him for assignment on Friday to open a roster spot for a prospect ahead of the winter meeting draft.

A major league team can claim him off waivers. He would have the right to reject the assignment and become a free agent if he is not, because he has at least three years of major league service.

Infielders Rougned Odor and Tyler Wade were designated for assignment.

When Andrew Miller was traded to the Indians in the July 2016 trade that sent Yankees outfielder Clint Frazier to the Indians, he was a prized prospect.

In his first season in the majors, he has never had more than 246 plate appearances. He was limited to 41 plate appearances in the season after he suffered a concussion in a spring training game.

He hit 12 homers and drove in 38 runs in the year, but he struggled with defense and made a mistake against Boston in June.

His defense was much improved this season, but he hit.186 with five homers and 15 RBIs. He didn't play after June 30 because of a problem with his balance.

"I'd love to have the chance to talk about this situation publicly and probably plan to do so soon," he wrote. My issues have been very personal to me and something I've wanted to handle privately, but there's been a lot of inaccurate things reported about my injury that I'll clear up.

He had a salary of $2.1 million last season and was eligible for an award.

Cashman said last week that he was working out in Atlanta.

Cashman said that there was a lot of expectation and optimism that what transpired would not be an issue as he entered next season.

The New York Mets traded Nick Nelson to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for minor league infielder TJ Rumfield and left-handed pitcher Joel Valdez.

The Yankees were able to protect five prospects in the winter meeting draft. The Yankees selected the contracts of Stephen Ridings and Ron Marinaccio, infielder Oswaldo Cabrera, outfielder Everson Pereira, and left-handed pitcher JP Sears.
