The criminal justice system is not equitable according to Vice President Kamala Harris, who commented on the Kyle Rittenhouse verdict.
The vice president and former prosecutor said on Friday that the verdict was for itself. I've spent most of my career trying to make the criminal justice system more fair. There's still a lot of work to be done.
Biden stood by the jury's decision after Harris' comments seemed to condemn the outcome of the trial.
I stand by what the jury has said. Biden told reporters on the White House lawn that the jury system works.
While the verdict in Kenosha will leave many Americans feeling angry and concerned, we must acknowledge that the jury has spoken, said Biden in a written statement.
"I know that we're not going to heal our country's wounds overnight, but I remain steadfast in my commitment to do everything in my power to ensure that every American is treated equally, with fairness and dignity, under the law," he said. Everyone should express their views peacefully, consistent with the rule of law. There is no place for violence or destruction of property in our democracy.
Rittenhouse was found not guilty on all five charges. He was on trial for the deaths of two men during civil unrest in 2020. His lawyers said he acted in self-defense.
