An investigation by the magazine, titled "Shocking lack of concern for customer data at e-commerce giant Amazon", describes a shocking lack of concern for customer data at e-commerce giant Amazon, where employees took advantage of the faulty system to look up celebrities' purchases. It seems that company officials failed to prioritize securing customers' most personal information despite their professed customer-first mentality. The customer purchase histories were made available to the customer service team with little security or supervision.

One former service rep who asked not to be identified said that he remembered colleagues looking up the purchases of the stars of the movies and even looking at their purchase logs. Other staffers looked up exes and girlfriends. A former customer service manager says that everyone did it. They weren't supposed to.

Questions about the company's integrity were raised after accusations of employees viewing seller data to develop their own products. During an antitrust hearing in 2020, former Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos insisted that employees don't access that data, but he couldn't guarantee that the policy prohibiting employees from doing so wasn't violated.

If a company mismanages internal access to it or carelessly leaves it open to outsiders, your data can be at risk. The story by Wired calls into question whether Amazon is worthy of the trust of its customers.
