Major League Baseball to provide minor leaguers with more furnished housing across all levels

Major League Baseball said that an expansion of housing accommodations is expected to provide more than 90 percent of minor league players with furnished housing.

Minor leaguers scheduled to make six-figure salaries over a full season will be exceptions to the policy. The players will receive housing at various levels.

Morgan Sword, MLB's Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations, said in a press release that the owners went into their first season modernizing the player development system focused on addressing longstanding issues that have impacted Minor League players for decades. As part of the new system, owners increased salaries from 38% to 72%, provided more amenities, and removed all clubhouse dues, and reduced in-season travel with better geographical alignment.

The unprecedented nature of the past two years has further exacerbated affordable housing challenges across the country that existed before the Pandemic.

The expansion of the minor league system will not affect the housing provided to players at the Player Development and Spring Training Complex levels.

Bedrooms must have a single bed for every player. The clubs will pay utility bills. Hotels that meet league requirements may be provided where apartments and rental homes are not possible.
