Quincy Promes is accused of attacking a relative at a party.

Quincy Promes, a Dutch footballer, will be charged with attempted manslaughter and assault over the stabbing of a family member.

The Spartak Moscow player is accused of seriously injuring a relative's knee in an attack at a family party.

Promes was arrested and held in custody for two nights while police questioned him about the incident.

The 29-year-old denied the allegations.

The 29-year-old from Amsterdam will be charged with attempted manslaughter and assault.

The suspect in the Dutch media reports is Promes, who played for the Dutch club in the last two years.

Abcoude is a town just outside Amsterdam where the incident happened.

Promes stabbed a relative in front of several witnesses after an argument, according to the Dutch national broadcaster.

The relative was quoted by the AD newspaper as saying that Promes came at him in a strange way.

The relative filed a complaint with the police after he was injured.

It can be punished by a prison sentence of up to 42 months.

The date of the court hearing is not known.

Promes denied any involvement through his lawyer, but he has not spoken about the incident to date.

The footballer moved to Spartak Moscow in February this year for a reported 8m.

When asked about the incident in an interview when he joined the club, he said he would leave it to his lawyers. I have done that before.

Promes had a successful first stint at Spartak Moscow. He was named Russia's footballer of the year.

He played for Sevilla in Spain's La Liga before moving to the Dutch Eredivisie.

He has scored seven goals in 50 appearances for the Dutch national team.

He last played for the Netherlands in a Euro 2020 match against the Czech Republic.

The criminal case against Promes was the reason why Louis van Gaal wouldn't pick him for the team. "I don't think I pick players who are involved in such matters," van Gaal said.
