The National Suicide Prevention Hotline will be able to be reached by text next year after the Federal Communications Commission voted unanimously on Thursday. Text message providers have to support the three-digit code by July 16th, 2022. On that same day, people will be able to dial 988 to access Lifeline. If you need help before you call or text 988, you can call or chat with a counselor online.

The FCC chair said that 6,000 Americans call the hotline on an average day. She said that creating an easy-to-remember 3 digit number makes it easier for people to get help when they need it most. The shorter 988 number could be more accessible for people to call or text in times of distress.
