A person who does not match the sex they were assigned at birth is referred to as a transexual. A person who was born with male genitalia may identify as a woman.
According to the Williams Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles, there are over one million people in the United States who identify as trans. The research found that 0.8% of adults in California, Georgia, Hawaii and New Mexico identify as trans, compared with 3% of adults in Iowa, Montana, North Dakota South Dakota and Wyoming.
What is the difference between a person who is male and a person who is female?
Being trans means different things to different people. There is no one way to be a trans person, and no one way to feel about yourself, according to the organization.
A person's internal sense of being male, female or something else is their gender identity. The gender identity of a person is related to their sex at birth. The two do not match for people who are trans.

Sometimes a person's gender identity doesn't fit in with the choices. According to the HRC, people who see themselves as being both male and female, neither male nor female, or as falling completely outside these categories may identify as genderqueer. The community of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and questioning individuals are referred to as the LGBTQ.
Activists of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transvestite, Transgender, and Intersex (LGBTTTI) community march against homophobia in So Paulo, Brazil.
A person's gender expression is their dress, behavior, voice or body characteristics. According to the HRC, a person's gender expression may or may not match society's expectations. The term "gender non-conforming" refers to people whose gender expression is different from what is expected of them. Not all people who identify as gender non- conforming identify as trans.
The public's understanding of gender identity and expression is changing as more people share their stories, according to the HRC.
The flag is made of transexual material.
Monica Helms, an openly trans American woman and Navy veteran, designed the flag in 1999. The blue and pink tones represent traditional colors for baby boys and girls, while the white horizontal line represents those who are intersex, transitioning or consider themselves having a neutral or undefined gender.
The traditional colors of baby boys and girls are represented by the flag that was designed in 1999.
According to Point of Pride, the flag is designed to be symmetrical so it looks the same up or down. The original flag created by Helms and first displayed at a pride parade in Phoenix, Arizona, in 2000, is now at the National Museum of American History.
Sex and gender.
Sex and gender are not the same thing. A person's sex is his or her biological status. The determination of a person's sex depends on a number of physical characteristics, including chromosomes, reproductive anatomy and sex hormones, according to the American Psychological Association.
The APA said that gender is a societal construct that deals with the expected behaviors, roles and activities associated with the different sexes. People act and feel like they act because of their gender roles.
Sexual orientation is different from gender identity. According to GLAAD, sexual orientation is a person's physical, emotional or romantic attraction to another person, while gender identity is a person's sense of self. Straight, lesbian, gay or bisexual people are referred to as transexual. A person born with male genitalia may transition to being female but still be attracted to females. Even though she was born with male genitalia, the person may identify as lesbian.
Making the change.
Changing a person's sexual orientation is more successful than changing a person's gender identity. It can't be changed. Some people use hormones and surgery to better align their sex with their gender. HRC points out that many trans people can't afford medical treatment or surgeries.
"So-called 'gender reassignment surgery' (more commonly called 'gender-affirmation surgery' by both medical professionals and transexual individuals) usually references trans genital surgery," said Dr. Joshua Safer, medical director of the Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery at Boston Medical Center. Other options include chest-reconstruction surgeries and facial feminization surgeries.
If you have been treated with hormones and have lived for at least a year in the gender roles that match your gender identity, genital surgery is usually reserved for you. Candidates for surgery are reviewed by a medical team that considers mental health and physical health in determining the best treatment strategy for each person.
How gender reassignment surgery works.
Changing the voice to better match gender identity is important to those transitioning. "Here, we envision a world where a person with a gender identity who does not want to change their voice or speech can live in a world where they are accepted and respected as who they are regardless of how their voice sounds," said Dr. Helou.
"However, in the absence of radical and global acceptance, many trans individuals feel that their communication style is a top priority for making their external self congruent with their inner self." Our goal is to support and serve those people, while advocating for broader acceptance of the trans population.
There are names and pronouns.
After transitioning, many people change their names to match their gender or to something neutral. Changing legal documents, including driver's licenses, Social Security cards, passports and credit cards, is a critical step in transitioning. They have to go to court to get the changes made.
The HRC says it is rude to call someone dead-naming if you want to ask them their name and preferred pronoun.
According to the HRC, most people prefer to be identified with a pronoun that matches their gender identity. If she prefers, a trans woman should be called "she" or "her". Some people prefer a non- gendered pronoun over a gendered one.
Discrimination.
Being trans is not a mental disorder. It can't be cured with treatment. According to the HRC, there may be a persistent disconnect between the assigned sex and the internal sense of who they are. The medical professionals refer to this problem as gender dysphoria because it can cause pain and distress in the lives of people who are different from them.
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders was changed in 2012 to include a more neutral term for gender identity disorder. The World Health Organization removed the term "gender identity disorder" from its list of mental illnesses in 2019.
Research shows that people who are trans are more likely to have mental-health problems. The survey found that many health care providers don't give treatment to people who are trans. More than 70% of the people surveyed suffered physical or sexual violence at work, and more than 70% of them suffered physical or sexual violence at school.

In the most recent iteration of this survey, taken in 2015, it was found that children who have come out as trans are at risk.
When using the bathroom, trans people face discrimination. In a 2016 poll of Americans by CBS and The New York Times, 45% of respondents said that those who are trans should use the bathroom that matches their gender identity, while 42% said they should not. In May of 2016 the U.S. Education and Justice departments told school districts to allow students to use the bathroom that matches their gender identity. Several states joined in a lawsuit against the federal government.
The suicide rate among trans people is high because of discrimination. The Suicide Prevention Resource Center reports that more than half of the people who are trans thought about suicide. The National Suicide Prevention Hotline is available.
Help for parents.
Experts can help parents if they think their child may be a different sex. It can be difficult to determine if a child is trans, and should be done with careful evaluation from a multidisciplinary team.
Many children question their gender identities without being trans. Safer advised parents to be respectful of the child's feelings and to know that there will be no medical intervention until the child begins puberty. He said that initial medical treatments are not always permanent.

The history of people who are different.
According to an article by the HRC, the trans movement for social change has existed for less than a hundred years. The laws targeting trans people began to emerge in the 19th century, according to a visiting professor at Yale University. In the 1850s, a number of U.S. cities began passing municipal ordinances that made it illegal for a man or woman to appear in public in a dress not belonging to his or her sex.

In the early 20th century, gender reassignment was only being done in a few specialist medical centers around the world. The author of "Queer Permeability" said that one of the largest in Germany was targeted by the Nazis. Lili Elbe, whose story was made famous by the 2015 film "The Danish Girl", received treatment at theInstitut fr Sexualwissenschaft Institute of Sexology, or Sexual Science in Berlin. After Hitler came to power in 1933, the archives and library were burned. In 1973, the Institute came back to life.
In many countries, gender affirming surgery is still illegal, despite the fact that trans healthcare did not fully emerge until the second half of the 20th century. The first gender dysphoria program in the US would not be founded until 1968. In the early 1950s, the American trans woman Christine Jorgensen was helped with her medical needs by the Copenhagen University Hospital, after obtaining special legal permission from the Minister of Justice.
