America Ferrera explains why non-election years are still important for voters

America Ferrera has spent 13 years campaigning to make sure underrepresented voices are heard at the voting booth. She co-founded Harness after the 2016 presidential election and launched her own series to demystify the American voting process.

The late show host spent some time on how important civic engagement is between times, while the actor, director, executive producer, and activist talked about the second season of Gentefied on The Late Show.

"How do you keep people politically active when it's not as much in the public eye?" asked Colbert.

The most important times to engage communities and engage people are during those times. I could set my clock every two months. People think it's enough to get people to pull out Ugly Betty at a rally. It's like a winning strategy to go out and vote. And it is not a surprise.

She said that it's not about people's vote, it's about people's lives. People understand when things are transactional and you're just there to vote a couple of months before a campaign. Communities need to be engaged. They need to be educated. They need to understand how their vote is connected to their lives and their neighbourhoods. I think the work we do in a non- election year is what determines what happens in an election year.

Colbert asked America Ferrera why she wasn't running for office.
