The future of Miami's football coach is uncertain, given that the Hurricanes are in the process of hiring a new athletic director who will have to decide if the football program needs a change in direction.

The short-term matters are of the most importance to him.

Speaking out for the first time since Miami's athletic director was fired on Monday, the man who was hired for the job in the fall of 2016 expressed his appreciation for his former boss.

"I'm eternally grateful for the opportunity that I was given by the man I call my friend, the man I call my mentor, the man I'm forever indebted to," said the Miami coach.

Both the Hurricanes and the Hokies need one more win to become bowl eligible. The Hurricanes have an interim athletic director in Strawley, who knows that many Miami fans are on social media, while the Hokies have an interim coach who knows many Miami fans are on social media.

The goal this week is to beat Virginia Tech. "That's all we can do." Our team has been pretty resilient over the course of the year because of that mentality.

The Hurricanes lost to Florida State, a game in which they fell into a 17-0 hole and then gave up the winning touchdown with less than a minute remaining.

One of the coaching icons of Florida State is Bobby Bowden, who was hanged in effigy by fans at West Virginia in 1974. One of the best coaches in the history of the sport is considered to be one of the people who went to Florida State.

No coach can ever believe they're immune from criticism if Bowden is shredded by fans.

"People want to win," he said. There are a lot of good coaches. There are a lot of good teams. We have to figure out a way that someone can win and someone can lose when good coaches and good teams play each other.
