Opinion: Kyle Rittenhouse a hero? No, he was a callow, foolish boy who had no business being in Kenosha

Kyle Rittenhouse looks back before his trial starts at the Kenosha County Courthouse.

I have owned guns all my life. I hunted for a long time. My grandfather's Colt double-barrel shotgun is a family heirloom. I tried to teach my son the important hunter safety lessons that my father had taught to me, when he was learning to hunt.

I can't understand why anyone would think Kyle Rittenhouse is a hero.

He is not a hero. He was a callow boy who didn't know how to handle a gun and didn't understand the importance of having a gun for protection.

He should have stayed at home.

The state may or may not be able to prove its case against Rittenhouse, who was 17 years old when he shot three people. It may be too high of a bar for this particular jury to prove intentional, reckless and attempted homicide. His right to self-defense is a trump card. People have a right to defend themselves.

The night of the shooting, closing arguments focused on whether Kyle Rittenhouse provoked the violence.

Kyle Rittenhouse was charged with two counts of first degree murder and one count of attempted first degree murder in the deaths of two protesters and the wounding of a third during a night of unrest in August.

There is a lot of blame to go around for the events that led to the deaths of Joseph and Anthony. The people were committing crimes. When peaceful protests turned violent, the police didn't have good control of the streets, and that opened the door to self-taught enforcers of the law.

The best police officers know how to de-escalate a tense situation and the best officers know how to keep it from getting worse. A young person is not aware of these things.

Some people want to make Rittenhouse a hero and others think he's a positive role model for young people. He took action. The police stood down.

All I can see is recklessness. The videos of Gaige Grosskreutz's arm exploding are some of the most vivid images in my mind. This should not have happened.

Guns have become a way of signaling loyalty to your tribe in a society where open carrying a weapon is a way to do so. There are people with guns in the statehouse. People who aren't sworn officers can cram the streets.

They claim to be protecting the public.

It's a lie. It's dangerous.

David French closed his essay in The Atlantic in a different way.

The law allows foolish men to defend their lives. A foolish man is not a hero. A political movement that turns a deadly and ineffective vigilante into a role model is a movement that is courting more violence and encouraging more young men to recklessly brandish weapons in dangerous places, and that will spill more blood in America's streets.

20 years ago, my father died. I know what he would say about the events. He would learn from what Rittenhouse did. He would tell his son not to do stupid things. You should stay at home.
