2022 World Cup qualifying: What next for Wales in March play-offs?

Robert Page was the manager of Wales from 1996 to 2005.

Wales are just two games away from next year's World Cup after taking a step closer to qualification for the first time in 60 years.

Thanks to Tuesday's draw with Belgium, Robert Page's side are through to the play-offs and will play at home in March.

Home advantage is more important than ever as both semi-finals and finals will be played over one leg, and Wales have avoided the possibility of daunting away ties against current European champions Italy or Euro 2016 winners Portugal.

Scotland, Russia, and Sweden are the teams that will play at home in the semi-finals.

Turkey, Poland, North Macedonia, Ukraine, Austria and the Czech Republic will be Wales' semi-final opponents.

The play-off semi-finals and finals draw will take place on 26 November.

I am proud of the players. "They've done the country proud," said Page.

I was a wreck. I told the players how proud I was.

It's unbelievable if I could get you to understand the dynamics of that group of players.

It's like nothing I've ever experienced before. To be a part of that makes me proud.

The atmosphere generated by Wales' fans was praised by Belgium's manager.

"Wales have an extra threat when they are at home," said the formerSwansea City boss.

It makes a big difference for Wales to be able to play at home in the play-offs.

Without the crowd, I think we might not concede that goal. Emotions can give you an extra step when the ball goes into the box or to a certain player's feet.

"I want to thank our supporters," Page said. They have been exceptional in the last two games.

I've been there as a player and it helps when they support us.

We are looking forward to the home tie. They helped us achieve that.

How do the play-offs work?

The Nations League sides who finished outside the top two in their World Cup qualification groups are not included in the play-offs.

Six teams are at home in the play-offs.

There are three paths to the play-off semi-finals. The winners of semi-finals 1 and 2 meet in the play-off final, the winners of semi-finals 3 and 4 meet in the play-off final, and the winners of semi-finals 5 and 6 meet in the play-off final.

The winner of the play-off finals will play the winner of the semi-finals at home.

The finals will be played between 28 and 29 March.

Scotland and a World Cup place.
