Since 1939, Billy Batson is the only person to have the title of thunder-wielding hero Shazam. Although he has a new movie in the works, DC Comics decided that a new hero should be chosen to carry the title. That's where Mary Bromfield steps in.

Yesterday, DC announced that a new miniseries by Josie Campbell (She-Ra), and Evan "Doc" Shaner, beloved comics artist, will be released. It's called The New Champion of Shazam! Mary is trying to adapt to college life after Billy's sacrifice that rendered their entire Shazam family ineffective. Then, the former Mary Marvel receives a message from a talking bunny with some very interesting news: Billy has chosen her to be the new Champion.
Campbell said that "Who Mary is" was the heart of the comic. She also explained that the book would examine her feelings about various circumstances in her life. It's really shedding light on her and her needs and desires. She was once a member of a superhero team and doesn't have them anymore. Then she has a lot of choices she must make fast.
Shaner admitted that, despite being a big fan of Shazam, he didn't have any interest in revisiting Shazam after 2015's Convergence event. He believed Mary should be the book's lead. Mary starred in 1973's Shazam! She was also featured in 1995's The Power of Shazam! and 1973's Shazam! Shaner clearly understands the potential Shaner and the character offer. He said, "We hope to have the same fun and creative energy behind much of the early stuff as [creator Otto] Binder." "But we also want that to be more accessible to modern audiences and make it more relatable for kids or young adults." See the cover by Shaner below. Mary is fully accepting the responsibility.
