After their loss to Marcus Spears, Stephen A. Smith gets heated with Marcus Spears about the Cowboys. (2:43).
FRISCO (Texas) -- Defensive end Randy Gregory will not be available for the Dallas Cowboys for several weeks after injuring his calf during Wednesday's practice. Coach Mike McCarthy said that this was due to Gregory suffering a serious injury.
Gregory could be placed on injured reserve. This would mean Gregory misses at least three more games. The Cowboys are currently planning to replace Gregory within their own roster and not seek out free-agent help.
The injury happened at a terrible time. On Sunday, the Cowboys will face Matt Ryan and Atlanta Falcons. Patrick Mahomes from the Kansas City Chiefs will follow. Derek Carr from the Las Vegas Raiders is next.
Gregory, Micah Parsons and Gregory are tied for the team's lead in sacks (5 each) and the team leads with 20 quarterback pressures (20). After a difficult start to his career, he has recovered one of the fumbles and forced two more.
McCarthy said that he was "probably one of our greatest players." McCarthy stated that McCarthy could argue that he was one of our best defense players. McCarthy said, "Yeah. Very disruptive. His activity feeds off our team and our defensive players, and we definitely feel for him. He has had a great year. He's back this morning, and he'll attack rehab like he did everything else.
DeMarcus Lawrence has not been with the Cowboys since the season opener, when he injured his foot while practicing. It is possible that he will return in the next few weeks. Parsons, a rookie defensive linebacker, has had 4.5 sacks. However, he has also been used as an edge rusher in some instances this season.
Dallas may be able to use Parsons on the edge against Atlanta Sunday, but it only has five linebackers on its 53-man roster.
McCarthy stated, "The game begins at noon on Sunday." McCarthy was asked if Parsons could be given more time to play defense.
Dorance Armstrong and Azur Kamara are among the Cowboys' 53-man roster. Bradlee Anae was also on the active roster earlier this season and Breeland speaks is on the practice squad.
McCarthy stated, "Right now, I'm focused only on the players who are here." After hearing the news, we made adjustments after yesterday's practice. We are happy with our plan and will continue to follow it."
McCarthy stated that the injury happened during one-on-1 pass rush drills. Gregory is the third Cowboy this season to sustain a calf strain. Michael Gallup, wide receiver, has missed seven of the last seven games due to a calf strain. He will be back this week. Quarterback Dak Prescott was ill with a calf strain and missed the game with the bye week.
McCarthy stated that Gregory's injury was similar to Prescott's.
McCarthy stated that there is no pattern among the many players, because one always looks at where and how it happened.
