Texas Tech has appointed Joey McGuire, Baylor associate head coach, as its next football coach.
Monday's announcement was made by the Red Raiders. McGuire is a long-standing Texas high school coach who is now in his fifth season at Baylor. He also serves as the team's third associate head coach. With the Bears, he has coached inside linebackers, defensive ends, and tight ends.
Kirby Hocutt, director of athletics, stated that "we are excited for the new chapter in Texas Tech Football's under the direction of Coach McGuire." "Our search committee was impressed right away by his connections throughout Texas and his enthusiasm to be the head coach at Texas Tech. We are delighted to be able welcome Coach McGuire's wife Debbie to the Red Raider family.
McGuire will replace Matt Wells who Texas Tech fired Oct. 25, despite a 5-3 record during his third season. Texas Tech considered Alex Grinch, former Texas Tech quarterback and USC offensive coordinator from Oklahoma, as well as Graham Harrell, the USC defensive coordinator.
McGuire led Cedar Hill High School's three Texas state championships, 12 consecutive post-season appearances and a record of 141-42. In 2020, he was inducted into Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor.
McGuire joined Matt Rhule’s Baylor staff in 2017. He was the top candidate to succeed Rhule when he left for the NFL's Carolina Panthers. He was still with Baylor coach Dave Aranda.
McGuire will take over as head coach immediately following the 2021 football season. Sonny Cumbie will remain the Red Raiders' interim coach for the remaining three regular-season games as well as any bowl appearances.
McGuire's expected hire was first reported by the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal on Monday.
