Isaac Hayden scored the first league goal for Newcastle in January 2020. This was after a 43-game streak.
As Eddie Howe, a potential new manager, watched from the stands, Newcastle rallied to draw with Brighton in the Premier League.
Magpies part-owner Amanda Staveley was seated alongside Howe, and he felt a short surge of emotion when Isaac Hayden scored a goal to equalize Ciaran Clark’s down header.
Newcastle's performance will have served only to warn him about the magnitude of the task at a club yet to win a top flight game this season.
Although the visitors are credited with being steadfast in their defensive posture, they were scattered in possession and offered little attack, except Hayden's efforts.
Brighton had looked set to win with Leandro Trossard’s first-half penalty. Clark was unable to stop the Belgian from getting the VAR intervention.
Graham Potter, Seagulls boss, was frustrated that his team's winless streak continued into a sixth match. This prevented them from surpassing Manchester United in fifth.
A dramatic ending almost added to that feeling, with Robert Sanchez being sent off as a goalkeeper for fouling Callum Wilson. The Newcastle forward was through on goal.
The hosts were left with a few anxious minutes to go before Lewis Dunk, central defender, took over in goal.
Newcastle, which has drawn three of their four previous matches on the road, is 19th in this table, equal on points with Norwich.
Howe has a big job ahead of him
Since October, when the Saudi Arabian-backed takeover was confirmed, Newcastle have lost two matches and drawn two.
They are closer to hiring a new manager than they were before Unai Emery turned down their offer.
Although Howe hasn't managed since his second stint at Bournemouth, which ended in relegation 2020, he has a reputation for playing attractive soccer, something that will be a hit with the Newcastle fans.
His first task is to get more from Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin, who together have contributed six of the 12 Premier League goals.
None of those three failed to score a goal at the Amex. Even if they were compensated by some solidity on the pitch, Newcastle will still need goals.
Potter's side is seven points ahead of their counterpart at the same stage last season, having dealt with their defensive problems despite selling Ben White (England defender) for 50m.
