Climate Conference Menu Mocked for Absurdly High Carbon Footprint

It's like smoking at a conference for lung cancer.
Carbon on the Menu

Many world leaders made the trip to Scotland aboard private jets for the Glasgow Climate Change Conference.

Even the food served at this year's COP26, which was hosted by the United Nations, left a significant carbon footprint.

The event's catering featured a lot of meat and fish. This is ironic considering the fact that raising livestock can have a large carbon footprint, as The Big Issue reports.

Climate activists were quick in pointing out the hypocrisy.

Joel Scott-Halkes, spokesperson for Animal Rebellion, said that it was like having cigarettes at a conference on lung cancer. The climate emergency will not be solved if such absurd decisions continue to be made.

Haggis Emissions

According to the conference website, a vegetarian diet is the best way to reduce our emissions.

The caterer made it a point to advertise the carbon footprint for each of their dishes in an effort to educate conference attendees and possibly influence their decisions.

According to the event's own rating system, the haggis, neeps, and tatties, some hearty Scottish food, required a staggering 7.5 pounds of carbon to make. What about a burger with Scottish cheddar cheese? Also available in 7.5 lb.

This is a lot more than just the 1.1 lb CO2 emissions per meal required to meet the Paris Agreement goals.

We aim to make it easier for everyone to reach this goal by including climate labels in our menus.

Scott-Halkes argued that the blatant disregard for meat, seafood, and dairy in the COP26 catering menu was a clear indicator of the UK's failure to understand the root causes of the climate crisis.
