Liverpool 2-0 Atletico Madrid: Liverpool sweep into last 16 of Champions League after comfortable win

Last update on. From the section European Football
Liverpool won with Jota's sixth goal of the season

With a win over Atletico Madrid (10-man), Liverpool made it into the 16th round of the Champions League. This ensured that they would finish first in Group B.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's goals of Diogo Jota, and Sadio Mene were the Reds' first goals. Felipe was then sent off just before the half-time break.

Jurgen Klopp's team should have taken more punishment after the break, but they missed a lot of opportunities. Jota also had another strike disallowed by the video assistant referee.

Atletico believed they had scored a goal from Luis Suarez's deflected shot, but VAR chalked it off as offside and they never threatened to come back.

The win not only sends Liverpool through to the knockout stages with two games left, but also extends the Reds' unbeaten season to 16 games.

They have never lost a single match since 6 April, when they were defeated by Real Madrid in the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

Alexander-Arnold provides assistance again

Recent meetings between the two sides have been a bit sour, as reflected in the mood at Anfield from the beginning. This game was not without controversy.

Liverpool struggled to find their feet in the midst of raucous fans. However, they soon found their feet and started creating opportunities.

Alexander-Arnold scored the first goal for Jota, with a delicious whipped delivery. Although it wasn't clear if he meant a shot for Jota or a cross for their second, the final result was the exact same due to Mane's attentiveness at the nearpost.

These two goals were enough to win the game. The contest was effectively over when Danny Makkelie, a Dutch referee, decided Felipe's swipe at Mane’s heels was sufficient for a straight yellow card.

Although the home crowd didn't get the flood of goals they desired in the second period, they were able to cheer Suarez until his substitution.

Atletico's last visit to Anfield was in March 2020. The nation was in lockdown due to Covid-19. Liverpool lost the Champions League final 16 in the aggregate after a 4-3 defeat.

Even though Coronavirus has been a menace to football for almost 20 months, only 200 Atletico fans went on the trip due to fears about the Delta variant. However, Liverpool's current form indicates that their European adventure is just beginning.
