Opelka's defeat secured Norrie her 50th tour-level win for the season, a record that was only matched by Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud, and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Cameron Norrie, the number one male British man's player, won a straight-set win over American Reilly Opelka in Paris to stay in contention for an ATP Finals slot.

Norrie won 6-3,6-4 to reach round three of the Masters event. This gives Norrie significant points in the race for the year-end finals.

If he can overcome a strong field and win in Paris, the 26-year old will be qualified.

Norrie will be facing Taylor Fritz, who defeated Andrey Rublev in the last 16.

American Fritz, 24 won his third consecutive victory against a top-10 player with a 7-5 7-6 (7-2 win) against Rublev, the Russian fifth seed.

Norrie hopes to run deep in Paris and land one of two spots at the season-ending finals. This will be possible on the 14th November.

The 13th world ranking has had the best season of their careers to be in contention for a spot in Turin. Turin has replaced London as the city hosting the year-ending event.

The left-hander reached six finals this season, including the Indian Wells title. His improved consistency has helped him climb from 74th to the top 15 in the world.

Norway's Casper Ruud, and Italy's Jannik Siner are both in pole position to qualify them for the eight-man finals.

Sinner, 20 years old, will face a difficult second round match against Spain's talented teenager Carlos Alcaraz on Wednesday.

Hubert Hurkacz of Poland is another rival to Norrie. He is through to the third round as well after winning straight-sets against American Tommy Paul.

Norrie said that he is watching closely how his competitors do in Paris. He told Amazon Prime, "I'm watching all of the matches and sure everybody else is. It's becoming interesting and it's fun to play for.
