Do you remember 10 years ago, when rumors circulated that Zack Snyder was promoting a Star Wars movie. This project was never realized. The film's basic idea, minus the mythology about a distant galaxy, is still being made, and has just received its first star.

Deadline reports that Zack Snyder has cast Sofia Boutella, Kingsman, Mummy and Star Trek Beyond actress, for his next movie, Rebel Moon. Rebel Moon is a play on Akira Kurosawas Seven Samurai. It is about a peaceful colony who is being threatened by evil leaders. The colony hires Boutella (a young woman we assume) to help them form a group of warriors. You already know. Seven Samurai in space.
Snyder will likely direct and co-write this movie with Shay Hatten, Kurt Johnstad and Kurt Johnstad. Like his last movie, Army of the Dead (which Snyder directed and co-wrote), this movie is being produced by Netflix. The streamer hopes to create a large original franchise that can be expanded with spinoffs, sequels, etc. It's basically a Snyderverse.
Because Boutella has been a franchise star for many years, the casting is a no-brainer for Snyder. Her first major role was as the deadly assassin from Kingsman: The Secret Service. She was also the title character of Dark Universe Tom Cruise's movie The Mummy. In Beyond, she was also one of the new aliens. Kingsman is the only one of those three franchises that's still alive on the big screen. It's almost as if she was right there but it hasn't quite come to fruition yet. Snyder is the only person who can start a franchise. This is especially true if it's an idea that he has been thinking about for many years. Snyder explained that this is me as a child growing up as a Star Wars and Akira Kurosawa fan. It's my love for sci-fi, and a huge adventure. I hope that this will also become a huge IP and a universe that is expandable.
