World Leaders Mocked for Flying Private Jets to Climate Conference

For the event, an estimated 400 private aircraft flew to Glasgow.
The Jet Worth

On Sunday, the United Nations Climate Change Summit kicked off in Glasgow, Scotland. The summit will feature some of the most prominent figures in international politics, including President Joe Biden and the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson. They will discuss everything from carbon neutrality to new infrastructure to help the world reach the Paris Agreement goals.

Ironically, many people are using private jets to get them to their destination. According to the BBC, 400 private aircraft flew into Glasgow for this event.

It is obvious that there is a double standard. Gizmodo reports that lawmakers resort to a mode of transport that is causing an alarming amount of carbon pollution in order to voice their concern about global warming. Four hours on a private jet is equal to the annual production of greenhouse gases by an average European citizen.

Is it worth it?

Some argue for the former.

The travel involved in getting there adds to the pressure on world leaders to ensure it is worth it, said Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland's First Minister.

Many people don't see the point. Why fly when you can travel with world leaders and lawmakers to a Zoom conference instead?

Maybe it's time to ban private plane travel, as Gizmodo suggests, or make private jet travelers pay for the outrageous emissions that their private aviation travel has caused.
