Global death toll from COVID-19 tops 5 million, as parents in the U.S. await next moves on vaccines for children

According to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University and experts including the World Health Organization (WHO), Monday's coronavirus pandemic reached a sad milestone of 5 million deaths worldwide.
This is due to inconsistencies in the way data are collected and distributed in different countries and because some have consistently and obviously underreported their numbers.

China, where the virus was discovered late in 2019, reports fewer than 110,000 cases and fewer deaths than it did last year. This puts it behind smaller countries like Ireland, which has seen 445,544 confirmed cases and 5,436 deaths. China has more than 1.4 billion people, while Ireland only has 4.9 million. China's death toll has not increased in recent weeks, despite having experienced new outbreaks and closing down at least three other cities.

In a Sunday press release, the company said that the FDA had advised it that it required more time to assess the request for the 100 mg dose level in 12- and 17-year olds. Moderna was informed late Friday by the FDA that it needed more time to examine the data regarding the risk of myocarditis following vaccination.
