Apple Quietly Kills 21.5-inch iMac

Apple continues to reduce its list of Intel-powered Macs and it appears that the 21.5-inch iMac will soon be put to pasture. Apple's move to use its own M1 processor in all products is yet another example of Apple's shift.

Mac Rumors claims that Apple quietly removed the entry-level computer from Apple Store Online this week. Apple stated in a statement that the machine was being discontinued and would no longer be available for purchase at Apple stores. According to 9 to 5 Mac archived data, the listing for 21.5-inch iMacs was taken down on Friday. It was not easy to find the listing in the first instance, since it had been hidden on a difficult-to-find page. A Buy button does not appear beneath the image of the 21.5-inch iMac when you open Apple's product comparison page.

Apple also sold the 21.5-inch iMac in a single configuration for $1,099 which included a quad-core Intel processor, 1080p display and a Terabyte of storage. Apple has already dropped two additional configurations, the options of 512GB or 1TB SSD storage for the 21.5 inch iMac with 4K resolution display.

The discontinuance comes six months after Apple introduced its M1-powered iMacs. These joined other product lines such as the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and Mac Mini, which Apple has revamped using its new proprietary processor.

Apple is doing what's expected. Apple has a long history of quietly dropping its older product lines and legacy Macs, even before it began to phase out Intel-powered machines. We reached out to Apple and will update this blog if we receive any response.

Apple's Intel-based iMacs aren't dead, but they aren't entirely gone. You can still purchase a 27-inch iMac with a few different configurations, but it is unknown how long they will be available. Apple may soon release a redesigned 27-inch iMac Pro with a mini LED display and the most recent M1 Pro or M1 Max chips.
