Wilfried Zaha's sixth minute opener was his third Premier League goal for the season
Wilfried Zaha became first to score 50 top flight goals for Crystal Palace, as 10-man Manchester City fell at Etihad Stadium.
After just six minutes, Zaha scored when Conor Gallagher robbed Aymeric laporte in his own half. Gallagher then wrapped up the points by scoring two minutes later.
Referee Andre Marriner sent Laporte to the stands after he brought down Zaha 35 yards away from the City goal.
Even though they were down a man, the hosts remained a threat to goal and Gabriel Jesus thought that he had levelled the score when he scored Phil Foden's spectacular far-post cross. However, Lee Mason, video assistant referee, decided that England forward was offside during the build-up.
City fans were furious at Palace's time-wasting tactics, which began in the first period. Manager Pep Guardiola, marking his 200th match as a manager in the Premier League, was not impressed by what he saw, as evidenced by the number of times that he spoke with fourth official Anthony Taylor.
Palace were a threat on the break with Jordan Ayew wasting good chances and Gallagher finishing Michael Olise's layoff to give Patrick Vieira's team victory and stop a frustrating streak of four Premier League draws.
Man City defense falls short
Although City's defense was almost perfect this season, there was an element that allowed Palace to break through.
As he advanced towards the halfway mark, Laporte had plenty of time and space to decide what to do. He didn't respond when Gallagher came in, and Zaha was done after a quick exchange.
Although the contact was not the best, the accuracy was good and the shot reached the bottom corner.
This was the first Premier League goal City conceded at home this season, and their fourth overall in the top flight.
Laporte's dismissal made it more difficult for them. Both Bernardo Silva, Jesus and Jesus needed to calm down at the half-time whistle.
Aymeric Laporte was sent to the ground for wrestling Wilfried Zha. This was his first sending off since joining Manchester City in 2018.
Vieira's victory
Palace won this ground in December 2018. It was their only positive result from 12 visits to Etihad Stadium. They otherwise had just two points.
Vieira's victory was special partly because of his time at City as both player and youth-team coach. But mostly because of his bad habit of giving away leads late during games.
Zaha's goal was their fourth win in five matches. However, they hadn't won any of the three previous ones.
Gallagher again proved to be a superb midfielder, his energy helping to protect a defense who at times did exceptionally well to not give away penalties, especially with the close control of Bernardo Grealish and Jack Grealish.
Palace was five points behind Chelsea when Gallagher scored.
Manchester City will next take on Club Bruges, Belgian side in the Champions League on Wednesday 3 November (20:00 GMT). Manchester United is their next Premier League match on Saturday, 6th November (12:30).
Crystal Palace will play Wolves at Selhurst Park on the 6th of November (15:00).
