Newcastle United 0-3 Chelsea: Reece James scores twice and Jorginho converts a penalty for the visitors

Last update on.
After scoring three goals in two Premier League matches for Chelsea, Reece James also scored in the 7-0 win against Norwich last Saturday

Reece James scored two goals to help Premier League champions Chelsea defeat Newcastle United in St James' Park.

After Callum Hudson Odoi's cross was directed into James' path, James hit the ball into the roof to give the visitors the lead after 65 minutes.

After a substitute Ruben LoftusCheek's shot was blocked, James, England's wingback, scored again to make it 2-0 12 minutes later.

Darlow fouled Kai Havertz, giving Chelsea a penalty. Jorginho converted it for a third goal.

Newcastle was playing at home for first time since Steve Bruce's departure, but failed to make any chances. Callum Wilson, England striker, scored a rare chance over the crossbar.

They are currently 19th in the table, but have not won a league title this season.

Thomas Tuchel's team extends their lead at top to three points. Second-placed Liverpool lost a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 at Brighton, while champions Manchester City suffered an unexpected 2-0 loss at home to Crystal Palace.

Chelsea finally defeats stubborn Newcastle

Newcastle fans felt this was a bitter reminder of the difficult task ahead and a depressing sign of the optimism surrounding the club since its 305m purchase by the Saudi Arabian-backed Public Investment Fund.

52,209 people attended the second home game of their takeover. It was also their first match with Graeme Jones, a lifelong Newcastle fan, as temporary manager following the sacking Bruce earlier in this month.

The hosts were not a threat to the attack, with only one goal, no corners, and 21% of possession. Chelsea managed their seventh league win of the season.

Jones said that Jones was realistic and stated, "We don’t want to play like this, but it’s where we are at the moment."

It was now a matter of whether Chelsea could manage without Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku, the injured forwards, or Mason Mount, who was unwell.

Chelsea started the second half better with Hakim Ziyech who shot over after being well placed in the first. His deflected shot bounced off the post.

Tuchel's side kept getting the chances with Havertz and Antonio Rudiger again wasting opportunities while Newcastle fought to keep on for what would only have been their fifth point of season.

The brave resistance of Chelsea was over in 65 minutes, when James scored the first of his well-taken finishes.

Chelsea's class won the day with three goals in 16 minutes to earn the three points.
