Microsoft has become the most valuable public company in the world, surpassing Apple's market capital on Friday. This change comes after Apple's Thursday earnings where it posted strong results, but disclosed that it had lost $6 billion due to supply chain restrictions. Microsoft shared Tuesday's positive earnings, thanks to Office, Windows and its cloud-based products.
CNBC reported that Microsoft's market cap stood at $2.49 trillion as Apple's was $2.46 trillion at Friday's close. This isn't the first time Microsoft has surpassed Apple. In 2018, Microsoft's market cap was almost $2.49 trillion, while Apples was approximately $2.46 trillion. CNBC reports that Windows-maker Microsoft also surpassed Apples market capital in 2018 for the first and second time since 2010. (Alphabet also took the crown from Apple and surpassed Apples market cap in 2016.
Apple has been a market leader for a while. In 2018, Apple was the first US company with a $1 trillion market capital and in 2018, it was the first US company with a $2 trillion market capital. The iPhone is still a hugely successful product. It is possible that Apple could regain the title of the most valuable company in the world.
