Facebook's New Name Is Meta

Facebook is changing its name to Meta, which will surprise no one.
After a lengthy speech by Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook Connect, about where the future of technology lies, the news was announced at the end of the year's Facebook Connect event. Why would Zuck want to change the name? According to Zuck, the name Facebook is too evocative of the social network and does not reflect his true ambitions for the company.

Today, we are a social media company. Facebook is the most widely used technology product in history. In a letter to Zuckerberg, he writes about the Meta rebrand. Our brand is so closely tied to one product right now that it cannot possibly represent all we do in the future.

People knew for a while that the name change was imminent. Facebook had already bought meta.com domain. Zuckerberg has been raving for months about the metaversea virtual world in which people interact through AR and VR. The new logo was revealed by Zuckerberg. He also pointed out that meta, which is Greek for the word outside of the company's services, would not require a Facebook account. Caroline Hyde, Bloomberg anchor, tweeted that the company will trade as MVRS beginning Dec. 1, 2021.

According to Facebook's Meta page, the metaverse is the next generation of social connections. We are changing our company name to reflect this commitment. Our vision is to bring the metaverse into existence.

Zuckerberg spoke about a variety of sci-fi-inspired concepts throughout his keynote. These included wristbands that read your mind and stylized avatars as well as photorealistic and stylized avatars. The metaverse will allow people to interact with celebrities and view NFT galleries. He also spoke highly of the metaverse economy which involves YouTube influencers selling Cuffing season perfumes.

Zuckerberg also mentioned Project Cambria as a hardware option, which is a higher-end Oculus Quest 2. As leaked renders suggest, you may have seen it earlier in the month. Ray-Ban Stories, the smart sunglasses collaboration between Essilor Luxottica and Ray-Ban Stories was also mentioned. He also mentioned a project for smart glasses that was more advanced, but said we are still far away from seeing them because a multitude of sensors and components would need to be trimmed to fit a frame of 5mm.

Zuckerberg acknowledged that many of the amazing things in today's keynote were years away from becoming reality. It is easy to wonder why Zuckerberg would jump at the chance when the end is so far in the future. Zuck also has an answer.
