The Premier League now allows only three substitutions per game since the start of the 2020-21 season

The International Football Association Board (Ifab) has recommended that five substitutions be made in football law.

This rule was introduced for the first time in May 2020, a month after football resumed following a halt due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Premier League voted against the continuation of its 2020-21 season.

The rules will be implemented by individual football leagues or competitions.

This decision was made following a meeting that Fifa chaired on Wednesday and involved Ifab's Football Advisory Panels and Technical Advisory Panels.

Ifab stated in a statement that FAP-TAP had recommended today that competitions be allowed to determine how to increase the number substitutes according the football environment. However, the current number of substitution options (three plus half-time), should remain the same."

According to the law makers, it was in response to "a number of requests by confederations, leagues, and other key stakeholders for this option be implemented permanently".

Many Premier League clubs felt that five subs would unfairly favor stronger teams.

Some top managers, such as Jurgen Klopp from Liverpool and Pep Guardiola from Manchester City, have stated that the limit on change has led to injuries.
