Sure, we all know what wardrobe essentials for work professional women are supposed to have in their closets, but if you're buying one for the first time or replacing one you've worn into the ground, it can be a pain to find exactly the right incarnation in stores. In "The Hunt," we search the stores for a basic item that every woman should have.

Tis the season: time for our annual roundup of classic wine-colored heels for work! As I've written, well, almost every fall - this is a great color that's really versatile for work. Pair it with neutrals like black, navy, and gray - but also have a little bit of fun with contrasting colors and pair them with reds, olives, and more. They're interesting but still subdued - great for corporate offices as well as business casual offices. The selection isn't huge this year, as everyone and their sister has multiple animal print heels out this year (stay tuned for that roundup), but there are a ton of great choices, and I think almost all of these are the perfect shade - not reddish or brownish like cordovan, not overly purple - but a deep, interesting color.

Readers, have you found any great pairs of classic wine-colored heels for work lately? Do they have a place in your wardrobe this fall, or are you more excited for animal prints heels?

Curious for some of our older roundups? Here they are from 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2012, and 2010.

I've always found Franco Sarto's shoes to be extremely comfortable heels (in fact, the pair I bought last year is still available) - and this beautiful "wine suede" pump is only $89. This blocky heeled pump from Halogen is the same price and a great shade of "plum suede." Pictured.

These Cole Haan wedges are on a great markdown at Last Call - and they're some of the only wedges I found in this roundup. They were $170, then marked to $145, but today they come down to $94 - nice. They come in sizes 5-11.

We featured this shoe from reader favorite brand Corso Como a few weeks ago, noting the high comfort ratings - in addition to more neutral options, the pictured "port royale suede" looks absolutely perfect. (Oooh, and it's newly marked down to $108.) It's available in sizes 5-11 at Nordstrom and Zappos; the brand also has a low (2.25″) block heel pump in the same shade. Pictured.

Readers continually rave about Vionic heels as really comfortable, and this low-heeled Minnie has been around for a few seasons now so it's well on its way to being a Hall of Famer. The pictured color, "wine suede," is a bit on the reddish side for me, but still looks really great. It's $139, available in multiple widths in sizes 5-12, available at both Nordstrom and Zappos.

Ann Taylor always gets the mix right between feminine-but-corporate - these pretty suede bow pumps in "mauve rose" look great for work. Looking to splurge on something similar? These Ferragamo heels have a similar bow detail. The pictured shoes are $138, available in sizes 5-11.

Boden has a NUMBER of great wine-colored heels for work, and it's hard to choose just one. Is it these croc-effect mid heels? These two-tone d'Orsay kitten heels? I think my favorite of the bunch are these velvet slingbacks (pictured; also available in black). They're $180, available in sizes 36-42.

Ooooh - what a lovely color ("velvet rose"). While SJP shoes are on the splurgier side, they all have a classic look to them with slightly elevated details, like the grosgrain trim on these stilettos. The heel is just over 3″, and I like that it comes in sizes 4.5-10.5.
