Aquaman's James Wan Was Secretly Working on a Black Manta Movie

The news seemed too bizarre to be true, and we all believed it. We found out in 2019 that Aquaman, the James Wans DC movie, was making a huge box office splash. Warner Bros. was working on a horror sequel based on the underwater trench sequence's creatures. This was a very unusual idea, but it seemed like the right avenue for Malignant, the director of Saw and Insidious to create a cool superhero horror movie.

The Trench movie was cancelled earlier this year, but we now know that it was not meant to happen. Wan posted last week a photo of Black Mantas (played in The Matrix Resurrections' new Morpheus Yahya Abdul–Mateen II) wearing a shiny helmet to his Instagram. This was to highlight the costume as well as the production work for Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom. The director discovered something quite shocking only a few days later. Instead of being a Trench movie, it was code for one about Black Mantas. You can see the comment that I took a screenshot from Instagram.

On Instagram, Wan goes by CreepyPuppet and was responding to a question from a fan asking if he would do a Black Manta streaming show (presumably HBO Max where many things are happening these day). Wan did not answer directly but instead said, "Ill let you know a secret, T rench spinoff movie was actually going to be a Secret Black Manta Movie."

Abdul-Mateen plays Manta in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. In the first film, he was almost a mini-boss and a pawn in Orms' (Patrick Wilson). In the film's final credits, Manta is saved by a marine biologist. He offers to help him defeat Aquaman and gives him information about Atlantis. These are the e vents you will likely see in the sequel or that may be coming to pass in this spinoff. The most fascinating part of this story, however, is Wan's and Warner Bros. inventing a fake plan to hide the real one. Did the Trench movie become a Black Manta film in the middle? Or did the studio reveal the plot before it was released? We don't know the answer. Although neither of these makes sense, it is a fascinating and fun way to imagine what might happen.
