Crystal Palace 1-1 Newcastle: Callum Wilson overhead kick rescues point for Graeme Jones' Magpies

Last update on.
Callum Wilson scored six goals in six Premier League games.

Callum Wilson's spectacular overhead kick was enough to cancel out Christian Benteke’s opening goal as Newcastle held Crystal Palace 2-2 in their first game since Steve Bruce's departure.

Bruce's former assistant, Graeme Jones took over the visitors at Selhurst Park on Wednesday after the 60-year old was dismissed by club's Saudi-backed owners.

After Palace failed to clear a Newcastle corner, Wilson sent an acrobatic shot into the top corner. The Magpies finished second for most of the game.

Eagles striker Benteke opened the scoring just 11 minutes into the second period. He powered a header into a corner from Tyrick Mitchell’s deep cross.

Benteke also hit the woodwork in both halves. He headed Michael Oliseh’s teaser delivery against the footpost in the first, before sending a looping header onto top of the crossbar for the second.

He missed a golden opportunity to restore Palace’s advantage by firing into the side-netting with James McArthur's through ball. Then, VAR ruled out a late goal for Marc Guehi.

Palace's sixth draw of this season places them in 15th position - five spots above Newcastle who are still second bottom with four points but have not won this season.

Wilson goal papers win over Newcastle cracks

Newcastle's new owners, who took Bruce's place as manager just 13 days after the club was bought by Saudi Arabian-backed 305m investors, have now said that a new manager will be appointed.

The group has already met with Paulo Fonseca, former Roma coach, and Eddie Howe, former Bournemouth manager, Lucien Favre, ex-Borussia Dortmund coach, and Roberto Martinez, Belgium boss, have been linked to the job.

The vast majority of Newcastle supporters were relieved by Bruce's departure, but the travelling Toon Army had little to cheer about as Palace took control of possession in the early stages.

Guehi cleared Emil Krafth's goalbound attempt. Wilson, however, was the closest visitor to scoring in the first half.

Allan Saint Maximin displayed fleeting glimpses his creative brilliance, but was frustrated by Newcastle's rare attacks that were easily handled by the home defense.

After Benteke had given Palace a lead that was well deserved, Palace quickly doubled their advantage. But Wilson stunned away fans with his magnificent strike in the top corner of Krafth's flick on.

In his six Premier League appearances, the former Bournemouth striker scored six goals.

The Magpies were lucky to have Benteke's strike disallowed. However, interim manager Jones will have been impressed with his team's resilience in the first of his two games as the manager before a new one is appointed.

Familiar failings for Palace

Patrick Vieira, even before Monday's draw at Arsenal - which Palace won for large periods - spoke out about the need for his team to "turn good performances and wins".

He has been a great Gunners captain in a short time. His new brand of football is more aggressive and attacking than Roy Hodgson's, but his victory over Tottenham Hotspur (3-0) remains his only win in the league.

The first half was filled with frustration, as 79% of possession was held by the hosts. However, they failed to convert their territorial dominance into goals.

Benteke could have scored four to five goals on another day. Newcastle was beaten by Benteke, a former Liverpool and Aston Villa striker. He scored a goal with a header in the second period but was denied twice by the goal frame. Then, he sent an acrobatic attempt of his own to narrowly beat Karl Darlow's crossbar.

Wilson's equaliser was overturned by Wilson, and the Belgian's Belgian player will be bitterly disappointed that he didn't restore the hosts' advantage quickly. McArthur had a pass to McArthur and McArthur steered a low effort wide at the near post.

Although he thought he had made amends for his previous misses, a firm header past Darlow on the 87 minute was not enough for Guehi. Palace were forced to settle for a fourth consecutive draw in the Premier League.
