Ashleigh Barty: World number one misses WTA Finals and ends 2021 season early

Since September's third round defeat to Shelby Rogers, Barty hasn't played.

Ashleigh Barty, world number one, has finished her season. She will not be defending her WTA Finals title next year because of quarantine rules that she would have to face upon her return from Australia.

Barty won't travel to Guadalajara Mexico this year for the Finals, as they were held last in 2019.

25-year-old Australian said that she didn't want to compromise her preparations for January's Australian Open.

Wimbledon champion, "It was difficult decision," he said in a statement.

"But I must prioritise myself and my recovery from the 2021 season, and concentrate on the strongest preseason for the Australian Summer.

"With the continuing challenges of travelling back home to Queensland and quarantine requirements I am not willing compromise my preparations for January.

"My focus now is on Australia and winning the Australian Open."

Barty won five titles in 2021, including the Wimbledon title, but has not played since she was eliminated in the third round at the US Open in September.
