Deadline reports that Mattels intends to bring the iconic dollunder Margot Robbie's stewardship and Greta Gerwig's directorto the big screen once again with her own Warner Bros. film. According to trade reports, Ryan Gosling is now in final negotiations to play the role of bachelor, occasional paramour and owner of many sets, if necessary, of fabulous clothes. Deadline reports Gosling was Gerwig's and Robbies only option for the crucial role in Barbie Extended Universe. However, the actor had previously declined to join the film... until production stalled sufficiently that Gosling returned to negotiations.
This is a strange story for a weird casting process for a strange movie. But, when you already have a live-action Barbie movie to direct and tap mumblecore icon Greta Gerwig (and co-write with Marriage Stories Noah Baumbach), then expect the unexpected. The film is close to being approved, with Gosling joining the cast. Filming will begin in 2022. Details are still being kept under wraps of a veritable box Barbies alternative career costumes, but suffice it to say that whatever Goslings take of Barbie's smooth-crotched object, it will probably be even more bizarre than Toy Story 3's.
We'll be sharing more about the absurdity of Barbie's movie when we find it.
