Oklahoma State Cowboys football coach Mike Gundy has 'perpetual five-year contract' restored

Oklahoma State and Mike Gundy reached a new agreement that will allow the Cowboys to reinstate the football coach to a five-year contract. The rollover was reduced to four years in 2020 by the university.
Gundy took a voluntary $1 million pay cut last year and changed his contract from a 5-year rollover to a 4-year deal. This was in response to criticisms of Gundy's football program after Cowboys runningback Chuba Hubbard made a scathing comment about Gundy for wearing a T shirt from OAN (One America News), in a picture that appeared on social media. His buyout was reduced from $5 million to $4million and his guarantee dropped from 75% to half-off. Gundy expressed regret for the pain and discomfort he caused to his players and other football players, and promised positive changes to his football program.

The rollover period is now extended to five years with this contract. The financial terms of the contract were not disclosed. These would be available at a later time, according to the school.

Gundy stated in a release that "Stillwater was home" and that she loved Oklahoma State and the community. It is an honor to coach my alma mater. My outstanding coaching staff and I look forward working together to make a lasting impact on the lives and well-being of our players.

Gundy was OSU's quarterback and Barry Sanders his running back. He was also the Cowboys' most-respected passer after his playing career ended in 1989. He is now 143-67 and has led the Cowboys to 15 consecutive bowl games. He is ranked 3 in the AP poll. Six seasons with 10 wins or more, and the Cowboys reached the AP Top 10 in 10 seasons.

They are 6-0 this year and No. 8 going into Saturday's game against Iowa State.

Chad Weiberg, athletic director at Oklahoma State University, stated in the release that Coach Gundy "has elevated the Cowboys as among the most consistent winners college football during his 17 year tenure." "OSU is among seven teams that have posted a winning year every year for the past decade. It entered 2021 as one the three Power Five teams that had a winning season and bowl appearance over the past 15 seasons. ... Despite our success over the last 17 seasons, I am looking forward to the future. Coach Gundy is a great coach and I believe Cowboy Football will be even better.
