Murray won the 2019 European Open - his first singles title after major hip surgery in January.
Britain's Andy Murray was eliminated in Antwerp's second round by Diego Schwartzman, the world number 14.
29-year-old Argentine won the first set after coming from behind at 4-1. She then won a close battle in the second set to win 6-4 7-6 (8-6).
Murray came back from being 4-2 down in set 2 to force a tie-break.
The momentum fluctuated throughout the tiebreaker. Schwartzman won one match point, but Murray saved one.
Murray, who won the event in 2019, just nine months after pioneering hip-resurfacing surgery, edged Frances Tiafoe. In a thrilling first round match, Murray beat Tiafoe to set up a meeting with Schwartzman.
Murray: "Mentally, I was poor"
He blamed his defeat on a "poor attitude", the former British number one.
Murray stated that he didn't make the right decisions in the second set of dealing with adversity.
"Mentally, I was poor. My attitude on the court was poor." These are two things that you can control. If they're not there it will make the match-making difficult.
The 34-year old is set to play in the Erste Bank Open in Vienna next Wednesday, and then in the Stockholm Open in November.
He could also be a qualifier or wildcard at the Rolex Paris Masters.
He said, "There will be a decision about the final Paris wildcard Monday. There are qualifiers that I could play.
Sport is a business that produces results. It doesn't matter how well you play, or how many matches you lose. You must be winning.
"That's what it was in the last few tournaments. Although there are no guarantees that the results will be achieved, I would like to win more matches.
"Playing against Murray is a joy"
In his post-match remarks, Schwartzman expressed respect for Murray.
"It was a pleasure playing against Andy," stated the Argentine who reached back to back finals in Antwerp 2016 and 2017.
"We hadn't played before, and he's coming back and each week he's playing better and moving more efficiently.
"I have a lot respect for Roger Federer because I was playing tennis as a child and I was watching Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray. Right now, it is a pleasure to play against him."
