Microsoft today announced new storage expansion cards for the Xbox Series X / S. Seagate will offer two cards: a smaller, 512GB card for $139.99 and a larger, 2TB card for $399.99. These expandable storage cards fit into the back of the Xbox Series X / S and match the internal SSD speed to provide additional storage for games.
The first storage expansion card was launched along with the next-generation Xbox consoles. It cost $219.99 for 1TB. The $299 Xbox Series S price went up to almost $520 to allow you to add storage or increase it to 1.5TB. There are many options available for Xbox Series S owners looking to expand beyond the 512GB space provided by the console.
Although the storage expansion cards are a great way to use the Xbox, they only come from one manufacturer. The 2TB Seagate model is cheaper than the Samsung 980 Pro SSD for PS5 at $449.99, but Sony's open approach means that PS5 owners can purchase Gen 4 SSDs for less than $300.
Microsoft previously stated that it would open up its storage expansion cards to other manufacturers and in different sizes. Seagate is the only company that has remained with Microsoft, but we expect to see other manufacturers and pricing competition soon. This will be a benefit for Xbox owners.
Walmart will sell the new 512GB Xbox storage expansion cards in November. The 2TB option will be available in December.
