Since 2007, Nigel Adkins led the sides to League One promotion three times.
Charlton Athletic has fired Nigel Adkins, manager of Charlton Athletic after seven months at The Valley.
After Tuesday's 3-2 defeat to Accrington at home, the Addicks have only won two of their 13 League One matches. They are now in the relegation zone.
Owner Thomas Sandgaard stated that "we are all disappointed that this season hasn't worked out", to the club website.
Johnnie Jackson, assistant manager, will temporarily take over and coach Jason Euell will be in charge.
"Nigel joined our team at the end last season. He had an immediate impact on the season. We finished the season strong, just missing out in the play-offs on goal difference.
Sandgaard stated, "Unfortunately we haven’t been able to bring that form into the season."
"I would like to thank Nigel, for his positive attitude and hard work during his time at the club."
Adkins, a former Southampton, Hull City, and Reading boss, signed a two-and a half year contract in March to succeed Lee Bowyer as manager.
After a difficult period under East Street Investments, Sandgaard appointed him as the club's first manager. He had a good track record of leading Southampton from League One to Premier League in consecutive seasons starting 2010.
Adkins was previously the leader of Scunthorpe United in 2007 League One and promoted from the third tier via play-offs two year later.
Charlton was his best team, with only one loss in his 10 first games. The Addicks finished the season in eighth, one point above the play-offs.
Adkins had brought in 15 players this summer and there were 16 left. However, his new side did not gel well enough to be able to repeat last season's form. They have only won one of the eight league games they've played, after failing to win any of the first four.
This team has had a difficult time defensively. Only Morecambe has conceded more goals than Charlton, which is the second-worst total in the division.

"It's a shame, he was a man of good intentions who started out really well.
"But this season started out poorly and has gotten worse."
Charlton was disappointed by the way the transfer window turned out this summer. Charlton acted too late, didn't really have a preseason behind them, which caused Charlton to be a little dissatisfied.
"Every now, then we'd get a glimpse of something changing, but the performances were disjointed and it didn't really work out for him."
