Nia DaCosta Plans to Finally Give Captain Marvel an Identity

Captain Marvel is a key character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, it would be difficult to describe Carol Danv ers. She has been portrayed only a handful of times throughout the franchise as the ultimate ringer that can take a punch. Director Nia DaCosta (Candyman), wants to change this with The Marvels.

After appearing in a few episodes on Marvels What If, Captain Marvel will next appear in The Marvels. This is DaCostas follow up to Anna Boden's and Ryan Flecks 2019 Captain Marvel. Although it would be difficult to tackle a major character's second major cinematic appearance in any situation, DaCostas next film will bring Iman Vellanis Kamala Kan and Teyonah Paarris Monica Rambeau together on the big screen as Brie Larsons Danvers. Roxane Gay interviewed DaCosta about her thoughts on The Marvels since the movie's production began. She also revealed that her greatest desire when she started the project was to discover the essence of Carols identity.

DaCosta stated that she wants to learn more about Captain Marvel. Who is she? What are her fears and hopes? What is her driving force? What is her motivation? Marvel's: Infinity and Avengers: Endgame both mention Carol's role in the greater universe and her journey to becoming a well-known hero. But in those movies, she was only there to fight until she disappeared again.

DaCosta believes that superheroes should be complex figures who are often morally gray. She cited DC's Batman and Superman as examples of characters that can be strengthened when you go beyond their surface appearances. DaCosta stated that no matter how powerful you are, you can never have complete control over your own actions. Magneto is an example of this. His emotions will always overpower his real power.

DaCosta is trying to live in the moment, not dwell on The Marvels gravity, and that she doesn't feel the pressure to make a movie. DaCosta said that a large part of her emotional life has been about accepting the fact that she's been busy over the past few years and reminding herself that work doesn't have to be everything.

DaCosta stated that I am trying to place less importance on my work worth. This helps me to shoulder the pressure. Do I have a good sister? Do I live in the right place? I try to be a fan, creator, and storyteller.

The Marvels is currently being produced and will be released in theaters on February 17th, 2023.
