Manchester United 3-2 Atalanta: Hosts fight back from two goals down to win Champions League thriller

Last update on. From the section European Football
Cristiano Ronaldo scored 137 goals during the Champions League

Cristiano Ronaldo was the winner in nine minutes as Manchester United beat Atalanta to win the Champions League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was booed off the pitch at the break because of their lack of creativity in falling behind to Mario Pasalic's and Merih demiral goals.

The jeers soon turned into cheers when United, roared by a growing frenzy crowd, rallied for one of their greatest European victories.

After Marcus Rashford's excellent finish, eight minutes into the restart, skipper Harry Maguire drove home. Maguire had been left at the far post and was unable to catch Edinson Cavani’s flick.

However, Ronaldo won the game as he had done three weeks ago against Villarreal.

It was his trademark header as he rose to meet Luke Shaw and find the bottom corner to send United up to the top in Group F.

Solskjaer's success when matters

Another night when Solskjaer appeared to grab it from the bag as Old Trafford was about to be seriously questioned.

The home fans made their feelings known by singing a long rendition "Ole's atthe wheel" before kick-off. This was before the familiar "Ole Ole Ole" chant rang around Old Trafford.

After the game was over, the song "Who put the ball into the German net" was heard. This song is dedicated to Solskjaer's most recognizable goal, 1999 Champions League winner. It ensures that he will be remembered as a hero at the club no matter what his managerial reins.

Solskjaer's problem is that Solskjaer's managing part hasn’t been working well.

After Saturday's loss at Leicester, Solskjaer decided to drop Paul Pogba. The United boss had complained about his side's defense at set-pieces, and Solskjaer said that something needed to change. Solskjaer was then rewarded with one of his Frenchman's replacements in midfield for the Atalanta opener, before his side conceded a second corner.

United suddenly found themselves in a lot of trouble from a position of little danger. This was due to Davide Zappacosta’s overlapping run that went completely unchecked and Scott McTominay's failure to react. Pasalic applied the finish from the six-yard box after the low cross.

United was unable to catch up in the Champions League home games, which were held under Solskjaer for seven consecutive years.

Demerai wanted the second more than Shaw or Maguire.

There was some agitation prior to the half-time whistle. This brought many boos. However, the singing section near the tunnel provided more positive support. Solskjaer acknowledged this as he moved towards the dressing rooms.

Completed the Comeback

Manchester United's hero Cristiano Ronaldo was again in the Champions League.

It was surprising that Solskjaer didn't make any changes at the break, given the 45 minutes they had just gone through and the task ahead of them in the second half.

The United boss almost made it a "you got us in this mess, get us out" move. It worked.

United ripped into their opponents, and Ronaldo and Rashford both could have scored before the England man did. Rashford converted a brilliant pass by Bruno Fernandes and opened his body up to find the far corner.

McTominay made a tackle and Ronaldo saved another chance as United built pressure in the same manner as Sir Alex Ferguson's great teams when they were in trouble.

Ferguson's teams were prone to being defensively secure. Solskjaer's most certainly is not, and David de Gea had to make some extraordinary saves to deny Luis Muriel & Ruslan Malinovskyi at an point when United would have surely lost.

They survived, regrouped, and Pogba and Jadon Sancho, along with Cavani, went again.

Maguire's victory had a lot of emotion behind it. Ronaldo's celebration was no less than Maguire's, as he fell to his knees and performed a double fist pump after becoming the United hero once again.

United can't be predicted where they will go with Liverpool, Tottenham and another meeting with Atalanta.

This game will not be forgotten quickly.
