After their defeat by Tottenham 3-2, Steve Bruce spoke about his future at Newcastle. This was his 1,000th match as manager.

Only 13 days after the completion of the Saudi Arabia-backed, 305m takeover, Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce has resigned by mutual consent.

In Sunday's 3-2 defeat at Tottenham, the 60-year-old manager took charge of his 1,000th match as a coach - his last game as Magpies boss since taking over from his new owners.

Bruce stated that there have been "highs" and "lows" in his life and that he hopes the new owners can "take the club forward."

Graeme Jones will be in interim charge of the Premier League team.

After three draws in their first eight Premier League games, the Tyneside club has been winless and is currently second bottom.

Bruce was named Magpies manager in July 2019. He achieved finishes of 13th & 12th during his two seasons as Magpies manager.

Bruce said, "I am grateful for the chance to manage this unique football team."

"I want to thank my players, coaches and support staff for their hard work.

They have overcome many challenges and given their all, and they should be proud of what they accomplished.

"This club has incredible support. I hope that the new owners can bring it to where it needs to be." All of us wish you all the best for the remainder of the season and beyond.

Newcastle stated that it would like to express its gratitude to Steve for his contributions and wish him well in the future.

Crystal Palace will host the club's next match at 1500 BST Saturday, 23 October.

Bruce, an external-link, stated that he believed this could be his last job in an interview with The Daily Telegraph.

"It's not about me. It's taken its toll upon my entire family because they are all Geordies, and I can't ignore it.

"They worried about me, especially Jan.

"I am 60 years old, and I don’t know if it is worth it to make her go through this again. Our lives are good so this will likely be my last job as a manager until I get a call from someone asking me if I could help them. Never say never. I have learned that lesson.

He said, "I wanted it to work so badly."

"It was a great honor to manage Newcastle United. Even in difficult times, I was determined not to give up and keep the club in the Premier League."
