Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, said that Apple plans to launch a new standalone 27-inch display in the early 2022. This information is based on Young's tweets as well as additional details he shared with MacRumors.
Young revealed to MacRumors that the 27 inch display will come with mini-LED backlighting. This is similar to Apple's 32-inch Pro Display XDR. Young tweeted that Apple plans to release the new display during the first quarter 2022. He said it would be significantly cheaper than the Pro Display XDR's $4999 price tag. However, exact pricing is yet to be determined.
Young also stated that the 27-inch display will be equipped with ProMotion, which allows for adaptive refresh rates between 24Hz to 120Hz. Young didn't specify the display's resolution at the time of publication. The Pro Display XDR has 6K resolution.
Apple introduced several other products with mini LED displays this week, including the 12.9 inch iPad Pro earlier in the year and the 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pros this week. Young anticipates that Apple's leadership in mini-LEDs will continue with this standalone display.
Young is a master at predicting display-related rumors. He accurately predicted that the new iPad mini would have an 8.3-inch screen and that the new MacBook Pro models will feature ProMotion. Young, who has 25 years of display industry experience, seems well connected to sources in the supply chain.
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple was developing a lower-priced standalone display in January. This would be Apple's first consumer-oriented LCD since the Thunderbolt Display was discontinued back in 2016.
